Veterans Home Care Benefits Explained: Eligibility, VA Aid & Attendance, and How It Works

This blog explains how VA Aid and Attendance can help eligible veterans and surviving spouses pay for in-home care. It covers who may qualify, how the benefit works, and why understanding these VA benefits for home care can make aging in place more affordable.

April 6, 2026

For many veterans and their surviving spouses, the desire to age in place is a top priority. However, the cost of professional care at home can often feel overwhelming. Many families exploring VA benefits for home care are relieved to learn that the Department of Veterans Affairs offers a specialized benefit known as Aid and Attendance. This tax-free pension provides additional monthly income to help cover the costs of in-home care, ensuring that those who served can receive the support they need in the comfort of their own residences.

What is the VA Aid and Attendance Benefit?

Aid and Attendance is not a standalone program but rather an "add on" to the standard VA pension. It is specifically designed for veterans and surviving spouses who require the regular assistance of another person to perform daily activities. This can include help with bathing, dressing, managing medications, or staying safe within the home environment. Because these funds are paid directly to the beneficiary, they provide the flexibility to hire professional W-2 caregivers to assist with daily living.

Eligibility Requirements for 2026

To qualify for this benefit, a veteran or spouse must meet three primary sets of criteria: service history, medical necessity, and financial limits.
  • Wartime Service: The veteran must have served at least 90 days of active duty, with at least one of those days falling during a recognized wartime period such as World War II, the Korean Conflict, the Vietnam Era, or the Persian Gulf War. An honorable discharge is generally required.
  • Medical Necessity: A physician must certify that the individual requires help with "Activities of Daily Living" (ADLs). This includes being bedridden, having significant visual impairment, or requiring a caregiver to protect against the hazards of their daily environment.
  • Financial Limits: For 2026, the VA has established a net worth limit of $163,699. This calculation includes the applicant’s annual income plus their countable assets, though the primary residence and one vehicle are typically excluded from this total.

2026 Benefit Rates and Monthly Support

The monthly benefit amounts are adjusted annually to keep up with the cost of living. As of 2026, the maximum monthly pension rates for those qualifying for Aid and Attendance are as follows:

  • Single Veteran: Up to $2,424 per month

  • Married Veteran: Up to $2,874 per month

  • Surviving Spouse: Up to $1,558 per month

  • Two Veterans Married to Each Other: Up to $3,845 per month (if both qualify)

These funds are completely tax-free and are intended to bridge the gap between a senior’s income and the cost of the professional care they require.

Aid and Attendance vs. Housebound Benefits

While Aid and Attendance is the most common benefit used for home care, some veterans may instead qualify for the Housebound benefit. This is designed for individuals who are permanently disabled and confined to their immediate premises, even if they do not require help with all activities of daily living. While the monthly payment for Housebound benefits is generally lower than Aid and Attendance, it still provides a vital financial boost for those who need consistent support to remain safely at home.

Combining VA Benefits with Other Care Options

Many families wonder if they can use VA benefits alongside other programs like long-term care insurance or California’s Medi-Cal. In many cases, these programs can work together to provide a comprehensive care plan. While Medi-Cal may have stricter asset limits, the Aid and Attendance benefit can be used to pay for the professional care services that Medicaid waivers might not fully cover. This layering of support ensures that veterans have access to the highest quality W-2 caregivers without exhausting their personal savings.

How the Application Process Works

Applying for Aid and Attendance can be a detailed process that requires significant documentation. Most families begin by gathering the veteran’s discharge papers (DD214), current medical records, and a detailed summary of monthly income and medical expenses.

The application is typically submitted through a local VA Regional Office. Because the paperwork is complex, many families choose to work with a Veterans Service Officer (VSO) or a professional care agency to ensure all medical expenses are properly deducted. Once approved, the benefit is often paid retroactively to the date the application was first filed, providing a significant financial cushion for ongoing home care needs.

Utilizing Benefits for Professional Home Care

One of the greatest advantages of the Aid and Attendance benefit is the ability to choose high-quality care. While some programs limit your options, this pension allows you to hire professional, background-checked caregivers from a trusted agency. By utilizing these benefits to employ W-2 caregivers, veterans ensure they are receiving care from individuals who are fully insured, trained, and held to the highest professional standards.
